As we enjoy this blast of spring weather (what stage of Midwestern winter is this… fool’s spring?), things are ramping up around Twisted River Farm, so we figured it’d be a good time to give you an update on what’s ahead in these coming weeks.
Our spring spinach is just starting to peek through the soil. Right now, we’re finishing up harvesting the spinach left from winter, and fingers are crossed that we’ve timed it perfectly that we’ll run out of the winter crop right as spring’s is ready.
We’re spending a good chunk of time planting these days: spinach, spring onions, arugula, radishes, cilantro, spring mix, lettuce, and bok choy. By the end of March, much of that will be ready to go, if we can hang on to these sunny warm temps, that is.
Also being planted this week: tomato seeds. Something new we’re excited to grow and offer to you this year. These will spend about eight weeks in the nursery, then they’ll be transplanted into the hoop house in late April/early May. The hope is that these will begin fruiting by the end of May.
Other happenings around the farm include setting up a couple of tunnels called caterpillar tunnels. The weather was perfect for it this past weekend, and while they’re filled with snow now, these mild, sunny days will quickly melt what’s inside, and then we can start planting once the soil is dry. When the snow melts, we’ll build another on the other side of the large hoop house.
If the weather stays nice like it’s been, we’ll be able to start shaping garden beds later this month, and perhaps even get some field greens planted. Last year we did this on March 30. We hope our luck will hold!
As for microgreens, those remain consistent and available for home delivery when the craving strikes.
There are other exciting things in the works that we’ll share more about in the coming weeks. Lots of things happening, days are busy, busy, busy, but that’s the way we like it.
